11 Essential Supplies You Need for Your New Puppy

11 Essential Supplies You Need for Your New Puppy

Having a new puppy is one of the most exciting times in your life. Getting to pick up that ball of fluff and play with them when you return home from work is enough to put a smile on anyone's face.

But, before you can jump into naming your new pup and figuring out if you're going to let them sleep on your bed or not, there are supplies for a new puppy that you need to get first. If you're not sure what supplies you need, there's no need to worry because we've created a new puppy shopping list for you to follow.

1. Dog Tags

Dog tags are much more than cute accessories that adorn your pup's collar. They are there to display information if your new pet gets out one day and someone else finds them.

The dog tag should have the name of your puppy, your address, and a contact number. This way, anyone that finds your pet will know where they came from and be able to return them to you without delay.

2. Poop Bags

We've all done it at one time or another in life. And that's stepped into a pile of dog poo. Of course, you might not have realized that you stepped into the poop until you began to notice a funny smell, but that's beside the point.

Most places where you'll walk your puppy, like your neighborhood or parks, ask that all owners clean up after their pets. It's common courtesy and helps to keep the area clean for others that use it as well.

3. Dog Treats

Training your new puppy is essential, especially if you don't want your pet chewing on your new shoes or using your home as the bathroom. The best way to train pets is through positive reinforcement and offering them a reward.

There are tons of treats that you can find at your local pet store that your puppy will love. Whether it's rawhide bones or peanut butter chewies, there's something for every puppy to love.

4. Grooming Essentials

Depending on the type of puppy you have, you'll likely need shampoo to bathe your dog in. Your puppy might have specific needs based on the type of coat they have.

Shampoos come in various brands, sizes and are meant for different breeds of dogs. If your puppy's skin is prone to irritation, there's a shampoo for that. And if they have a dry and brittle coat, there is also a shampoo for that.

5. Toothbrush

We know this sounds silly, but dogs' teeth need to be taken care of too. That's why the next item on our list that you need to secure is a toothbrush. Of course, there are dental bones out there that your pup can chew on, but there are times when an old-fashioned tooth brushing is the best way to go.

6. Nail Clippers

When puppy's nails grow because of how their paws are shaped, there is a chance that it could cause them serious irritation. You might be scared to cut your puppy's nails, but there are several types of clippers that have safeguards on them to ensure that you don't cut your dog's nails too short.

If you're still uncertain of cutting your dog's nails yourself, you can always have a groomer show you how to do it for future reference.

7. Dog Food

Much like humans, puppies need food and water to grow stronger and stay healthy. Make sure that when you purchase your dog food, it has all the vitamins and nutrients your pet needs to grow into the dog they're supposed to be.

Also, make sure that you choose the dog food that is meant for puppies. There's nothing fun about watching your puppy struggle to chew on large pieces of kibble.

8. Pet Crate

Even if you don't plan on putting your puppy in a crate to sleep, it's useful when you're not home or when you're traveling. The crate should be one that's big enough for your puppy to grow into without taking up to much space.

If you're someone who wants to focus on training, the crate is a useful tool.

9. Puppy Pads

There will be times when it's raining or snowing, and your pup doesn't want to venture outside. It's for this reason we recommend you purchase some puppy pads.

When you're training your puppy, you'll teach them that if they have to use the bathroom and you're inside to use the puppy pad. Make sure to place one in several rooms; that way, your pup can easily find one to use the bathroom on.

10. Leash

The leash is one of our new puppy essentials because there are several places that you can't take your dog if you don't have a leash. Leashes help keep your dog close while at the same time giving them some space to walk and explore.

11. Puppy Bed

Unless you're willing to share some blankets or pillows with your new puppy, you'll need a puppy bed to put on the floor or into their crate. Puppy beds come in an array of colors, sizes, and plush materials.

Trust us; when you see some of the beds that dogs have as sleeping options, you might get a little jealous.
