The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is in the top 10 of most popular dog breeds in the United Kingdom. The King Charles makes an excellent house dog.
Breed
The American Kennel Club formally recognized Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in 1995. These medium energy dogs are known as a “top tail-wagger” as their tail constantly is on the move. This dog requires a lot of human companionship and should not be left alone for long periods of time.
Appearance
The Cavaliers are small dog breed with beautiful eyes and a gentle expression. This breed has long feathered ears with silky and sometimes wavy coats which come in various colors such as black, tan, and solid ruby.
The King Charles Spaniel also grows feathery hair on its chest, feet, and legs. This dog has a medium length coat with a silky and wavy texture. The overall height of Cavalier averages out at 12 to 13 inches with a weight range between 13 to 18 pounds.
Nutrition
It is recommended to provide feed formulated to small sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and breeder to determine size and frequency to ensure health and lifespan. It is also important to provide clean and fresh water every day.
Grooming
The silky and wavy hair appears to need high maintenance, but surprisingly this breed is quite easy to groom. Its hair requires regular brushing several times a week to remove dead and loose hair to keep the coat shiny.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel only needs an occasional bath. The frequency depends on how active the dog is outdoors. This breed naturally does not need trimming but some owners do trim for a neater look.
Their long ears should be checked and cleaned weekly if there is any sign of redness and infections. Regular brushing of its teeth is necessary to promote gum health and prevent bad breath.
Exercise
Despite their small size, the King Charles Spaniel loves outdoor activity and a daily walk is a necessity. They have to be allowed to stretch their legs and run a few times a week.
They can adapt to living in an apartment as long as you can commit to providing sufficient exercise and activity on a regular basis. They also enjoy tracking and chasing. This dog is naturally well behaved and should be trained with a gentle hand.
