Introduction

The Collie originated from Scotland around 350 years ago. The lineage of this breed can be traced back to one dog called Old Hemp.

Unlike other herding dogs, the method of this breed is less aggressive and quieter yet still very effective.

There are 3 main types of Collie, which are Border Collie, Bearded Collie, and Rough Collie. There are some other types included in the same group but with no Collie in the name.

Collie is originally bred to herd livestock like cattle or sheep. They often use methods like stalking, crouching and nipping without killing.

This breed also has the ability to be a search and rescue dog.

They can even make a great actor, and they have appeared in famous movies like Lassie Come Home and Babe. Of course, some people keep them simply as household pets too.

Breed

The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Collie in 1885.

These medium energy dogs are known as devoted, proud, and graceful.

They can build a strong bond with all their family members. They love playing with them and can be protective of them.

The Collie is one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world. They can learn quickly names of objects, words, and commands. That’s why it is easy to train them. However, we must train them right away before their intelligence start to develop bad habits like unwanted barking or nipping.

The Collie is very energetic. They are not a typical dog who loves to lie around the house. Hence, it is better to give them a lot of physical exercises. In fact, they will be happiest when you put them to work.

Appearance

The Collie is a large-sized dog. Their average of the height is 24-26” (male) and 22-24” (female).

Their weight is between 60-75lbs (male) and 50-65lbs (female).

Their tail can be naturally bobbed or long, and the fur on it can be bushy, smooth, or feathered.

Their coat is varied too, where it can be long, short, or flat. There are various colors of the coat, which are black and tan, black, red and tan, and red. Mostly they come with white markings which you can see on their chest, belly, shoulders, face, and legs.

Nutrition

It is recommended to provide feed formulated to large-sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a healthy, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.

Grooming

Since the Collies are in full coat, they will need regular brushing once every week or two. They also require frequent bathing to keep them clean and good-looking.

Exercise

Due to their herding instinct, all owners of Collie must provide moderate amounts of exercise. It will keep them happy, healthy and also alert. Between 20-60 minutes of daily exercise is recommended.

Pet Crate Size

Pet Crates Direct recommends a 48" dog crate* for most adult Collies.
